Learning Objects going Commercial?

At a recent conference I attended an informal discussion on the adoption of the learning object packaging methodology by commercial organizations. I found the discussion to be based on a weak understanding of what this approach is and how it might benefit an organization. Maybe we can have a discussion here. What do you think?
